Work in progress

We have been in our house for 17 months now. When we moved in we nicknamed the backyard the 'tundra'. The people who lived here before us never tended the yard and I don't think we have even one stitch of grass in the backyard. We've spent all the spring/summer months working on trying to revive our front yard so that our street appeal is acceptable. Now we have finally started work on the backyard.

The people before us had dogs who would run crazily through the yard barking (according to our neighbors). We had a low spot in our yard and whenever it rained, this low spot would fill up with water, creating a giant mud puddle. Although there's still no grass out there, the weeds are under control (for the most part anyhow) but like the title says it's still a work in progress...

On the 17th Andrew began work digging a pond in the low spot...

As of the 20th, it was dug deep enough to put the liner and fill it with water. Then a fountain got added as well as some cattails, lily pads and fish...

Yesterday Tyler went out there and wanted to go fishing! He and Scooter had quite a fun time....

Yes, it is still a work in progress...we still have to finish lining the outside of it with rocks and figuring out a better filtration system. Andrew hopes to put a couple of park like benches around it when it's finished so we can sit at our own private pond on summer nights. This week though he's working a double shift so it will just have to stay as is for now.

I worked on the other half of the yard yesterday moving the wood pile and pulling the weeds that have grown around our shed. I still have some work to do on 'my half' of the backyard but my shoulders are just KILLING me after moving all that wood yesterday (as well as watching and playing with the babies). I can't wait till next summer when we can start putting actual GRASS in the backyard...

I love the pond. What a great idea! A word of advice...plant your grass in the fall. We planted the first part of our lawn in the fall and it is beautiful. We planted the 2nd half this summer and all we have are weeds. Good luck to you!
