Growing & Changing

Yup, Harley's learning about Growing and Changing in school this week.  I asked last night what he thought of it and he said he thinks it GREAT!!  I asked what he thought was great about it and he said it was science. (He loves science)...

 

Anyhow, I wanted to share a story that's funny and shows just how the autistic mind workds...that another momma of an autistic child passed on a few months back...

 

She is an RN and was 'giving the talk' to a group of adolescents with high functioning autism...She used a banana as a model to demonstrate how to put on a condom.  A few months later one of the girls came to her and said "I think I'm pregnant"...The RN asked her "well didn't you use a condom like I showed you?"  The student responded with "yeah, but I don't see how putting it on a banana would help us, it didn't make sense but that's what we did!"...Needless to say by the next time she held the class she had gone to one of 'those stores' to purchase a life-like model for demonstrating how to put on a condom...BTW: the girl ended up not being pregnant...WHEW!

 

Now when telling Robert tihs story he about died of embarrassment. He said he HATED the growing and changing unit because it was so embarrassing...Harley really doesn't understand the emotion of embarrassment...Robert thinks he's lucky in that respect...

 

Now it's up to me to teach Harley that he doesn't need to teach everyone he meets about the Science of Growing and Changing...LOL
